Don’t Be Ignorant AND Arrogant

Being ignorant AND arrogant about Bitcoin is a bad combination

Human characteristics are interesting. There are many desirable traits that many people wish to have. Traits like being compassionate, being a good listener, having a strong work ethic, or having a desire to improve.

Alternatively, there are traits many people would say they don’t want to have and don’t want others to have. Traits such as having a quick temper, being lazy, being arrogant, or being selfish.

I venture to bet most people would enjoy being described as any of the first four traits and dislike being described as any of the latter four traits.

But, this is a Bitcoin newsletter. How do human characteristics relate to Bitcoin?

In this specific case, I would say it’s important to not be both ignorant and arrogant when it comes to Bitcoin.

Being ignorant to Bitcoin is something that I believe we have all encountered at some point. There are many stories of people saying they first heard of it in 2010, 2013, or even 2015 and did not think it was worth their time to learn more or buy any of it. These people now face varying levels of regret because of their ignorance.

The positive of being ignorant is that you can choose to no longer be ignorant. In the case of Bitcoin, it takes a personal choice to accept you were ignorant, and then choose to learn so that you are no longer ignorant. Additionally, as more and more people learn about Bitcoin, they create content about Bitcoin which enables there to be better and better resources for newcomers to go to so they can move from being ignorant to being knowledgeable. If you compare the content around today compared to even just 3 years ago, so much has changed. I expect this trend to continue. Further, as the price continues to soar to new all-time highs, and is over $100,000 (at the time of writing), I believe it is becoming increasingly difficult to be ignorant about Bitcoin.

Okay, so being ignorant about Bitcoin today is a choice and is a choice that can easily be solved by choosing to learn. If it’s so easy, what stops people from making the choice?

Arrogance.

Arrogance, as it relates to Bitcoin, is continuing to hold onto misconceptions or beliefs that history and the rest of society have proved to be false. For example:

  • Bitcoin is a Ponzi scheme so I do not want any

  • Bitcoin is bad for the environment so I do not want any

  • Bitcoin is a scam so I do not want any

All of the above points are blatantly false, yet so many arrogant people hold onto them as truth.

Arrogance is spitting in the face of innovation and thinking it isn’t worth your time because you think you know better. Arrogance is thinking that because you read one article on Yahoo Finance you know better than someone who has spent countless hours and years of their lives learning. Arrogance is calling a 2 trillion dollar asset a “toy.”

Arrogance is a characteristic to have if you want to be left behind.

You can only be ignorant for so long. At a certain point, if the majority of society knows about something, you have no other choice but to learn about it. 15 years ago, the iPhone was new. Now, essentially the whole world knows what a smartphone is. The same process has already started with Bitcoin and I believe will rapidly continue over the coming months.

Being arrogant is similar but a whole other beast. While being ignorant requires that you be unaware of information, being arrogant requires that even after receiving information, you choose to not change your opinion. Being arrogant is one of the worst characteristics a human could have because it shows an unwillingness and inability to receive new information and change your opinion. Arrogant people are stuck in their ways and refuse to accept that they may be wrong.

Being ignorant and understanding you are ignorant is important. However, being arrogant in your ignorance is a lethal combination for your future, especially as it relates to Bitcoin.

If you are currently ignorant and arrogant about Bitcoin, accept this reality. Then accept the reality that Ignorance will not hold you back from purchasing or holding Bitcoin. Rather, arrogance will.

Remember, everyone finds Bitcoin eventually.
